Prior to the 1850s, Marina Del Rey was a salt-marsh popular among duck hunters. The earliest plans to turn the area into a commercial port were developed in the late 1800s, but the area was not used as a harbor or marina until the 1960s. Marina Del Rey itself was formally dedicated on April 10, 1965, following reconstruction after a winter storm caused extensive damage between 1962 and 1963.
Today, Marina Del Rey remains an unincorporated community within Los Angeles County. Marina Del Rey's population tops 8,800 inhabitants, with approximately 6,5000 boats housed in the Marina itself.
